What Is Jazz?
The term “jazz” means many things to many people and covers a vast selection of styles. In most cities in the world you’ll find jazz bands playing just about every genre of jazz. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen are no exception with numerous bands performing various styles including swing, Latin, bebop
Some of the top jazz musicians in the UK are living and working in Scotland. The country has some popular and well established jazz and blues festivals, these include Edinburgh Jazz Festival ,Glasgow Jazz Festival and Aberdeen Jazz Festival.
But what is jazz? Some people may say “it just sounds like a bunch of musicians playing anything they want all the time – and at the same time”. Many times as performers the Ritz Trio have received comments such as “I don’t like jazz but I like what you are doing”. So the term “jazz” can be a bit difficult to define and means many things to many people. The Ritz Trio have through many years of experience been able gear the music and to the type of event and situation. So you don’t need to worry when booking this jazz band for your event!
So What Is Improvisation?
Jazz improvisation is the process of creating fresh melodies on the hoof over the repeating cycle of chord changes of a tune. It has been said that the best improvised music sounds composed, and that the best composed music sounds improvised.
Duke Ellington once said “You’ve got to find some way of saying it without saying it.”
Whilst jazz roots go back to around 1917 the music is timeless and is able to take it’s influences from anywhere and to any generation. By the late 1930’s jazz had become THE popular music.
Jazz musicians like to play their songs in their own distinct styles, and so you might listen to a dozen different jazz recordings of the same song, each sounding very different. The musicians’ playing styles make each version different, and so do the improvised solos.
Jazz is about making something familiar-a familiar song-into something fresh. This is reflected in the Ritz Trio repertoire and approach when performing at weddings and events around Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The music Ritz Trio play includes the great standards as written by Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington to more modern classics ranging from Van Morrison and Sting to Stevie Wonder.
The Trio’s rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” recorded as a single by Frankie Valli is always a foot tapping crowd pleaser. The Trio have a number of “jazzy” arrangements of other popular tunes sure to please.
